About The Tennis Store

Solow Sports Sign

In 2005, Derek Hsiang flipped on the tv to watch 35-year-old Andre Agassi miraculously grind through his US Open draw and push Roger Federer to the limit for the first 3 sets of the final. Immediately, Derek caught the tennis bug. Armed with a passion for tennis, a dash of blissful ignorance, no business plan, and little industry knowledge, Derek left corporate life in 2007 and partnered with Doris Maffia. Together, they founded The Tennis Store on the revolutionary principle that people should be able to buy tennis stuff on the internet.

Aside from all the other massive tennis e-commerce sites that have done it before, it had never been done before. So Derek threw together a website and began operating out of his bedroom, laptop, cell phone, and a closet in Tennisport in Long Island City while juggling multiple side jobs. It proved to be a massively successful exercise… in mediocrity.

Two short years later, in 2009, the bedroom & laptop enterprise revolutionized the industry again, when Derek came up with the industry-transforming concept of allowing people to buy tennis stuff in a store. Eminent domain may have also had a hand in this move, but we won't discuss that. All the inventory and operations together in its 582 sq foot headquarters in Huntington Village under its new brand, Solow Sports, and operational efficiencies shot up 610%. This figure is completely made up.

Parorama of the store

Behold, our former massive 582 sq ft retail behemoth! Contrary to what this panorama might suggest, our store is quite rectangular. But this is what you might see if you have eyes on opposite sides of your head. The interior was designed by award-winning KPF architect Albert Lin.

Fast forward another two and a half years to 2012: Solow Sports tripled its retail storefront to its current home 30 feet away at 347 A Main St. in Huntington Village. It's 1700 square feet of pure retail sexiness that you'll have to see for yourself, although the picture is pretty much what it looks like. It features all the innovations of before:  racquets, re-stringing, apparel, footwear, bags, racquets, demos, platform tennis, etc. There’s just a whole lot more of it, and the display shelves are significantly shinier than the previous iteration. Also, we built a cage to hit balls in. How awesome is that?

Behold! Our even more massive 1700 sq ft sexy retail space! This store was too big for a panorama, so this is actually what you'll see if you have eyes on the same side of your head.

So stop by and check out the fastest growing and sexiest tennis store in Huntington Village. Demo some racquets, shop for the latest gear, or maybe get your racquet restrung; Derek will gladly destroy you in Topspin 4 for Playstation 3 while you wait.
